What to do if you lose your passport whilst on holiday

The thought of losing your passport while you’re on holiday is a daunting one, but sadly it is a reality for many vacationers. Amidst the chaos and stress of losing your passport, we do not want you to worry about the financial aspect of the ordeal, hence the inclusion in our travel insurance policy!

Here are some useful information to help you organise emergency travel documents and make a claim on your travel insurance if you lose your passport or have your passport stolen when you are abroad.

What to do if your passport is lost or stolen:

Always report the loss or theft of your passport to the local police of the country you are visiting and obtain a police report as soon as possible. This is usually needed to obtain replacement travel documents and to make a successful claim on your travel insurance.

Contact the nearest Seychelles Embassy or Consulate. They should be able to issue emergency travel documentation to enable you to return back to the Seychelles. In the absence of both, contact the Consular Affairs Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs

If applicable, complete the form to cancel your missing passport. (This is important to prevent identity theft which is a growing crime)

Call the number provided in your travel insurance policy. You will be assisted either with the help of finding and securing your lost passport or the cost of refund in relation to getting a new passport.

*Once you are back in the Seychelles, contact us to recoup the cost of your emergency documentation, up to the amount shown in your policy schedule. You will need to supply a police report and evidence of the cost of any emergency documentation.

5 tips for keeping your valuables safe at university

We’ve written fairly extensively on the necessity of purchasing a Student Travel Insurance Plan before you leave for university, but being proactive when it comes to ensuring your valuables are protected goes a long way.

This is especially true when you’re at university where you are surrounded by hundreds of people each day in places like the classroom, library or your local coffee shop. With so many people around, it’s important to keep your belongings safeguarded at all times to minimise the risk of theft.

These 5 tips can help you keep your stuff safe on campus:

Make a list of your valuables  including makes, models and serial numbers where it applies. Write down any details you might need if anything goes missing such as phone numbers to cancel bank cards, phone contracts and to access benefits of your insurance policy. Make sure that you have photocopies of any important documents such as your passport and that these are stored separately to the original versions.

Secure all valuables!  It is easy to forget to put valuables in a safe place, especially when you are in a hurry. Consider investing in a small safe for expensive jewelries and other valuables, even your passport.

Do not leave your valuables unattended, especially your laptop.  If you’re carrying it around, put it inside a larger bag rather than making it obvious by carrying it only in its case. Back up your work on mobile storage devices, external hard drives or by using a website such as Dropbox

Keep your doors and windows locked at all times. You may be tempted to leave your bedroom door unlocked if you’re only leaving for a short time, but you never know who can have access to your residence when you are not present. Locking your door can be an easy way to help secure your belongings. Refrain from loaning your keys to anyone, including close friends. This helps minimise the risk of someone entering your place without your knowledge.

Get insured! Despite taking preventive measures to protect your stuff, it may not always stop thieves. Purchasing a content insurance policy can help you prepare for the unexpected, as it may help replace your belongings if they are stolen or damaged.

If, despite your precautions you are still burgled, do not waste time. Report the theft as soon as you are aware that it has happened.

Frequently asked questions about our improved Healthcare Insurance Policy:

Just in case you missed it  we recently launched a new, improved version of our affordable Health Insurance policy!

You may recall that for only 25EUR per month, our affordable health care plan covers up to EUR100,000 emergency treatment overseas. This covers the cost of the treatment, accommodation fees and airfares for the patient and one accompanying family member. Moreover, for the added cost of EUR10 we also cover the cost of access to private medical and dental practitioners in Seychelles.

The questions we get asked most often are:

Who is the plan for?

Ideally everyone should have a healthcare policy, so we aim for inclusion. Therefore any individual can become a new member of the plan up to the age of 59. Existing members can be covered up to the age of 75. Even babies can be covered as from 1 month! Corporate clients can provide the plan to their employees and their family members, whilst individual clients can take the plan for themselves and/or can also add their family members to the plan.

How soon after I have paid can I make a claim?

That depends on what you are filing a claim for. Let’s take a look: Your plan comes into effect immediately if an injury results from an accident, twelve months after date of entry in connection with Caesarean &/ or complications that can reasonably be related to it thereafter. Six months after date of entry for Dental Expenses/ Treatment incurred in connection with Orthodontic, Prosthetic Appliances, Crowns, Dental Implants, Surgical Operation, Periodontics and Gum Treatment and for all Optical costs if out-patient option is taken. Three Months after date of entry for all other treatment.

So how do I make a claim?

It’s actually  a lot more simple than you think! For In-Patient Treatment  requires admission outside Seychelles, simply call our customer service on 429 5107 and we will provide full guidance on the procedures.

For Out-patient Treatment, we require a fully completed claim form, accompanied by original invoices, receipts and Doctor’s prescription and medical record.

What are the main key exclusions to this plan?

Understandably treatment or expenses in connection with or attributable to any illness or physical condition for which the Insured Person had knowledge of or had been diagnosed or treated by a Medical Practitioner prior to the commencement date of the Policy.

Preventive treatment, check-ups or health screening.

Treatment directly or indirectly arising from or required in connection with male or female birth control, infertility, contraception, sterilisation (or its reversal) and any form of assisted reproduction.

Treatment for Alcoholism/Drug Abuse and Treatment of any illness or injury arising directly or indirectly from any such abuse or addiction.

Any condition directly or indirectly caused or arising from or in any way attributable to or aggravated by or related to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), or the mutants, derivatives or variants thereof, including Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and AIDS-Related Complex (ARC).

How is payment made for my treatment?

All pre-approved in-patient treatment (emergency/planned) in Mauritius will be paid directly to the hospital by Sacos upon completion of treatment.

All Pre-approved planned treatment in all other regions will be paid in advance to the hospital by Sacos upon the receipt of hospital invoice.

All Pre-approved emergency treatment in other regions will be on a refund basis.

Out-patient treatment will be on a refund basis, meaning Sacos will refund you the total claim, less 20% excess amount applicable under the cover.

How do I sign on to a health insurance plan?

Easy Peasy. Just select the In-Patient plan and region you require.

Choose the optional out-patient cover if you would like to opt for it.

Complete our health insurance proposal form.

Receive your quote for the options selected (it can take up to 14 days to receive confirmation of acceptance onto the plan).
