When was the last time you did a home inventory?

If we asked you right here and now to list everything you have in your house, would you be able to? Chances are you would miss out quite a few things! The truth is, most people own more things that they realise; it’s easy to remember the big stuff, like your flat screen, your laptops, your car! But what about your jewellery, or your very expensive bag collection?

If you’re wondering why we want to know, it’s because all of this is considered as personal property… you know, for insurance purposes. In the unfortunate event of your house being destroyed by a fire, or as the result of some disaster, having a list of the possessions that were in the house makes filing your claim a lot easier

Start developing a careful inventory of your personal property. List items you have, go through each room one by one and make a list. Keep said list somewhere safe. Keep any and all receipts on expensive purchases and remember, when you make new purchases, be sure to add them to your inventory!

Is your vehicle adequately insured?

For the majority of us, buying a car is a pretty big deal, and a lot of thought and research goes into choosing the ideal vehicle; we have to make sure that it looks good, that it is fuel efficient, that it is eco friendly, that it is powerful enough to go up the Seychelles’ mountains… And you would think that once you’ve actually bought the car and have the key in the ignition, that the decision making is done. But in really, you still have another big decision to make: Deciding on the right motor insurance!

The most common insurance that people opt for is third party cover, mostly because in their mind it is the cheapest one available. However, that decision could end up costing more than you expected in the long run.

You need to consider: How you drive. How long you have been driving for. Who will be driving your car. Will you be able to cover the cost of repairing your own vehicle should you get into an accident where you are at fault? Have you considered little extras like rental car reimbursement and windshield covers? In order to adequately protect yourself (and your car), you need to make sure that you get insurance coverage that matches who you are and how you drive, and allows you to have any damages repaired without you having to constantly be opening your wallet!

What is an insurance deductible?

As the owner of any insurance policy, you’ve no doubt come across the commonly used term ‘deductible.’ But how much do you understand about what the term means?

In simple terms, a deductible is the amount of money that you, the insured, must pay for a claim before your insurance will kick in.

If your insurance policy has a deductible, you will be responsible for any losses and/or payment of services up to a certain amount as stated in your insurance policy.

How is a deductible beneficial?

A deductible isn’t only beneficial to your insurance company, it’s beneficial to you as a policy holder, too! As a policy holder, it can be a way to lower the cost of your insurance: The more risk for loss that you agree to pay before your insurance kicks in, the lower the chance for your premium to be.

Look at it this way:  You are unfortunate enough to be in a car accident and your car’s damages are assessed at SCR15,000 in damages. If your insurance policy has a SCR5,000 deductible, you will have to pay the first SCR5,000 of the damages to your car out of your own pocket and your insurance will pay the remaining SCR10,000. Generally, once the deductible is met, any future losses that you might have during the term of that policy will be covered in full.

Talk to one of our insurance agent about what deductible options are available to you, and how they will affect the cost of your coverage. Call us on 429 5000 or send an email to info@sacos.sc and an officer will get back to you.
