5 low-cost ways to recognise your employees

We understand that not all businesses, especially  small ones, have the resources to reward high-performing employees. That being said, there’s nothing to stop you from finding other ways of showing your gratitude. Below we share gestures you can make to let your employees know you appreciate them — without breaking the bank.

Say ‘Thank You’

Sometimes, a simple ‘thank you’ can help foster loyalty and good feelings among staff. Make it a point to regularly show appreciation for their hard work. It’s a small gesture that costs nothing, yet many managers restrain from doing it. Remind yourself and others to pay attention to your team’s efforts.

Put it in writing!

While emails are often the go to mode of communication, they tend to come off as a bit impersonal. Try going for a handwritten note, even if it’s a short one. It’s something that they can pin up on at their desk or keep in their purse as a reminder.

Have an ‘employee of the month’ ritual

It may not seem like much, but having an employee of the month ritual could foster a little competition and help boost productivity. It’s also a great way to acknowledge hard working employees. It shows them that the effort that they put in is being recognised. Take a minute at every staff meeting to publicly acknowledge team members who went above and beyond on a work project or customer issue in the past week or two.

Use other markers to measure productivity

We get it, it’s easier to use standards like rewarding someone for the highest sales figures or the most positive customer feedback. But there are other ways that employees go above and beyond for their organisation. This can be something as little as helping another employee finish a workload,  volunteering to help over a weekend, or something as simple as making a cup of coffee. These little gestures deserve recognition, too.

Match efforts with correlating gifts

As an example, if someone gave up one of their Saturdays to come into work, you could give them a gift of a paid Friday off; or you could pay for lunch for employees who are putting in extra hours to meet a deadline. Additionally, you could give grocery hampers at the end of every month, in turn. We’re sure the gesture would come highly appreciated.

Home maintenance checklist

As a homeowner, you are no doubt familiar with the time and labour that home ownership requires. Just like having regular oil changes keep your car engine happy and healthy, keeping up with regular home maintenance tasks will keep you from future headaches and wasted money. With everything that needs doing around the house, it is easy to overlook certain tasks. We’ve compiled a few suggestions on what you can keep an eye out in order to help keep your house, and the surrounding area in tiptop shape.

  1. Inspect roofing for damage, leaks, etc.: Nothing sucks more than having your house leak during heavy rainfall. Not only can it damage your possessions, but also leaky roofs can cause mould over time. Regular inspection can save you money in the long run and ensure your interior is always protected.
  1. Check the drainage system around the house: Puddles should not stand around your home for more than 24 hours. If the water stays, or moves toward your foundation, check your gutters. The most likely culprit is a bad spout or a loose connection. It can also be an indication that your system is blocked, or may just need cleaning.
  1. Clean out gutters regularly: More often than not, gutters accumulate leaves and debris, especially during rainy seasons.
  1. Conduct regular inspection of your home exterior: You would be surprised at how much a good silicone/caulk can fix a lot of your problems! Take a close look all around your house, and make any repairs as needed. Does your house need a fresh coat of paint? Are there cracks in your foundation?
  1. Clear dead plants/shrubs from the house. Did you know that plants can weasel their way into cracks and holes on the exterior of your home, causing damage and shortened longevity? Always clear shrubs and vines away from the house before they have the chance to cause any damages.
  1. Check trees for interference with electric lines: Do not wait for it to fall over. Trim any trees that pose a threat.
  1. Drain water from potted plants: Whilst not technically a home maintenance tip, still water in potted plants, empty containers and blocked drains is the ultimate breeding ground for mosquitoes! For your health and safety, ensure that you drain them regularly.

Health: Swaps to try out in 2019

One of the most common New Year resolutions is to lose weight, or at the very least be more food conscious. We all know how hard it is to give up on the things that we love to eat! But improving your health does not necessarily mean giving things up: it could be as simple as a few tiny tweaks to your diet! Here are a few alternative to consider swapping for next time you’re about to cook, or are out grocery shopping:

  1. Sugary drinks for diet or sugar-free options

You’d be surprised by how much sugar you could cut from yours and your family’s diet by simply opting to go for diet, low calorie or no added sugar versions of sodas and juice. Swap full cream to low-fat milk. Or better yet, choose water!

  1. Olive oil over butter & margarine

Swapping to olive oil can help lower your family’s fat consumption and lower cholesterol. Remember, not all fat is bad fat!

  1. Swap white bread for rye or wholemeal

The high fibre content in wholemeal, rye or seeded bread makes it much better for your health than white bread. Additionally, the way wholemeal or rye breads are digested also means that the sugar, which turns into energy, is released into the bloodstream much more slowly than in white bread. Same goes for pasta! Where possible, swap white pasta for wheat.

  1. Rice

Same with bread, brown rice is better for you because it has more fibre than white. If you’re able to, swap rice out altogether with steamed vegetables. Cauliflower rice is the new ‘rice’ right now for reducing calorie intake and upping your veg count.

  1. Swap sugary cereal for plain cereal

You’ve no doubt heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It ensures you have enough energy to get through to lunchtime without reaching for unhealthy snacks. If cereal is your go to breakfast, instead of going for the sugary laden ones, opt for whole-wheat cereal biscuits or plain shredded whole grain, like Weetabix, cheerios or oatmeal.

  1. Steam not fried

Where possible, steam your food instead of frying. Even boiling is a better alternative.

Small changes can add up to a big diet makeover, whilst still enjoying the things that makes your taste buds tingle. How about you? Are you trying to be healthier this year? What simple swaps will you be making?
